YWCA’s Equity Summit to feature Robin Rue Simmons and Jan Schakowsky

Evanston Alderman Robin Rue Simmons and U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky will lead a discussion about reparations on a national level as part of YWCA Evanston/North Shore’s annual Equity Summit, which will be held virtually May 13 and 14.Simmons and Schakowsky will focus on H.B. 40, also known as the Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African-Americans Act, which would establish a commission to examine slavery and discrimination in the United States from 1619 to the present. The commission would then recommend appropriate remedies, including reparations. Schakowsky is a sponsor of the bill.The discussion of H.B. 40 is one of numerous breakout sessions offered at the Equity Summit, which will take place virtually from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 13 and 14.The summit is appropriate for those 17 and older. Tickets are $125 per person and registration is required.
