Gibson leads the way for Flying Fish at Illinois Senior Championships

Senior ChampsMatt Gibson placed second in the boys 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:51.93 at the Illinois Swimming Senior Championships, leading the way for YWCA Evanston/North Shore’s Flying Fish swim team, which sent a host of competitors to the event at the University of Illinois at Chicago.The meet was held March 5-8 before USA Swimming and Illinois Swimming canceled competitions due to the coronavirus pandemic.Other Flying Fish swimmers who placed in the top ten include:

  • Milo Balzer, tenth in the boys 200-yard butterfly (1:56.56);
  • Lily Consiglio, eighth in the girls 100-yard butterfly (56.62);
  • Brendan Long, seventh in the boys 1,000-yard freestyle (9:43.43);
  • John Martin, sixth in the boys 1,000-yard freestyle (9:39.67), eighth in the boys 400-yard individual medley (4:07.90), ninth in the boys 500-yard freestyle (4:40.50).

Anne Leinenweber, Lily Consiglio, Jenna Wild, and Erin Long also placed tenth in the girls 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:51.26.With nearly 500 swimmers on the Flying Fish swim team and 1,000 annually in its acclaimed swim school, Flying Fish Aquatics at YWCA Evanston/North Shore is one of the largest aquatics programs in Illinois.
