YWCA Evanston/North Shore today announced that it is one of 12 YWCA local associations nationwide that has received a grant for a high-tech job training program. The program, known as YWeb Career Academy, focuses on increasing access to digital skills, such as Web development and design, particularly for women of color.

YWeb is part a $5 million commitment by Google.org to YWCA USA, the national organization of YWCA based in Washington, D.C.  Google.org is the corporate charitable arm of Alphabet, Inc., and its subsidiary, Google.

As part of YWCA Evanston/North Shore’s ongoing mission to eliminate racism and empower women, YWeb will provide education in digital skills to traditionally underserved or vulnerable populations, such as survivors of domestic violence and low-wage workers. YWCA will couple this programming with wraparound and barrier-reduction services such as housing assistance, case management, and job coaching and placement to ensure each participant’s success.

“YWCA USA is thrilled to partner with Google.org as we work to create innovative approaches to workforce development and forge new ways to bring the future of work and skills development to women and communities of color across the country, said Alejandra Y. Castillo, CEO, YWCA USA.

Said Karen Singer, president and CEO of YWCA Evanston/North Shore, “We are thrilled to be chosen to participate in this innovative program. YWCA Evanston/North Shore views this grant as a critical investment in the rebuilding of our local economy, which has been devastated through COVID-19, the economic downturn, and racial inequity. By focusing on women of color, YWeb will provide opportunities for economic empowerment to a traditionally overlooked workforce.”
