Evanston, IL – YWCA Evanston/North Shore raised $355,405 in private donations to win second place nationwide in The Allstate Foundation Purple Purse Challenge.
The Purple Purse Challenge, which took place during the month of October, is an annual fundraising and awareness campaign centered on the role that financial abuse plays in domestic violence. Purple is the color of domestic violence awareness and the purse symbolizes financial independence. One of the primary reasons women stay in or return to abusive relationships is that they don’t have the financial resources to break free.
In addition to what YWCA Evanston/North Shore garnered in donations, it received more than $60,000 in prize money from The Allstate Foundation, bringing the total amount raised to more than $400,000. This funding will help support YWCA’s economic empowerment programs for women, along with its other domestic violence services such as its 24-hour crisis line, emergency shelter, legal advocacy, counseling, and longer-term supportive housing program known as Bridges.
“We are grateful to the hundreds of people who supported our work through this campaign,” said Karen Singer, CEO and president of YWCA Evanston/North Shore. “The funding we receive through the Purple Purse Challenge is vital to the services we provide to help women move toward economic independence and be free from violence.”
YWCA Evanston/North Shore has participated in the Purple Purse Challenge since 2014. It won the challenge that year, took second place in 2015, and won again in 2016 and 2017.
“Regardless of the outcome, the Purple Purse Challenge is an effective way for us to increase awareness of the role that financial abuse plays in domestic violence and engage people in the work we do to help women break free,” said Singer.
